You can use up to a 4.250 in a stock block. It just makes ring spacing bad. Not exatlly the most desirable combination, but it has been done. The 4.1 and 4.125 strokes used to be commonly used in the stock LS1 blocks for 395 strokers. You could have used the 4.125 crank in your 6.0 block along with a 4.030" bore and had 421 cubes.

3.875 stroke
comes to a 396
