I would say if you need higher octane gas in a car that is a dd....detune it or just buy higher octane gas...i don't think you can add a can of anything to substitute for a safe substantial gain. If you have something that needs 116 octane go to the airport and get some....paint thinner and chemical x won't add 20 octane pts

^^Seriously hope your joking....
What grade fuel are we starting out with, and what grade would that mix result in???

Sorry to jump in so late, but about 20 or so years ago I spoke with a chemist at Union 76 regarding the addition of Toluene to gasoline. I seem to recall the reccomendation he gave was to not exceed a fairly low percentage; something like 15%. I also don't recall the reason why; something to do with diminishing returns. I subsequently opted to talk directly to the folks at VP. They were hugely helpful, and took thier time in discussing my needs. I came away with a very favorable impression of them. Basically it was easier to buy the right racing fuel for my application than it was *trying to play chemist.*

toluene does eat up rubber... if i were gonna use it in my car (i have!!!) i'd make sure that it wasn't left in for an extended period of time. i only use it when i'm sure the gas will be ran out in a few days.
good luck
good luck

I used to run 5gal of xylene with 15gal of 93 octane unleaded and a pint of transmission fluid as a lubricant. The mixture worked fine made 99 octane, but was a pain to mix,so I switched to Torco accelerator concentrated racing fuel, much easier. One can makes 20 gal of 93 octane into 97 octane.

Thanks, Andy/Chris/Whitt - that answered my questions.
I'm curious on this for my buddy's FI talon. I just wanted to know if we could use a mixture or if it'd be better if he bought VP when he goes to the track and turns his boost up.

You could use any of the following (but in sparing quantities), refineries are already using some of them to "trim" final products to meet spec. The difficulty is we don't really know what is in the fuel to start with, so what do you add?
Ethanol RON115 - no more that 10% total.
Toluene RON115 - no more than 30% total - hardens/perishes rubber.
Isopropanol RON117
n-propanol RON117
(Also Isobutanol, n-butanol, sec-butanol and Isooctane {traded as alkylate})
Ethers (mix well with gasoline)
MTBE (Methyl-Tertiary-Butyl Ether) RON112
TAME (Tertiary-Amyl-Methyl-Ether) RON110
ETBE (Ethyl-Tertiary-Butyl-Ether) RON105
Additives (Generally not environmentally friendly)
Ferrocene (dicyclopentadienyl iron) adding 30PPM to RON80 fuel gives a +2
MMT (Methylcyclopentadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl) adding 18mg/L to RON91.6 gives +1.5 - Generally used by refineries for trimming.

Where does one purchase MMT ?
