In the 80's a guy made a "cam" with the ports in the cam it had no other valvetrain parts. Just two "cams" sitting on top of the head. They put it on a stock 350 and it nearly doubled the HP and fuel economy. One of the manufacters bought the patent and it hasn't been seen since. I think it was Chrysler that bought it.

In practice, developing a durable, reliable, precise valve actuator system that is relatively light weight and affordable is like climbing Mount Everest in shorts and a T shirt . . . virtually impossible and extremely risky! If it were easy, it would have been done fifteen years ago. That being said, I hope that this technology becomes a reality for production engines before hydrocarbon based engines breathe their last breath.
