Default Block Lightening

Anyone tried that?

Pros & Cons?

Does it worth it?

I should say by CNC machining.

.

Not worth it. If you have the time, grind off all the little tabs & casting crap.
Smooth the valley for better oil flow, and do something else. Not worth designing program for a few lbs.

Ditto not worth it, but for different reasons.

GM engineered the block with just enough mass to hit their reliability targets at stock power levels and with production casting technology (wall thickness vs core shift). If you start upping the power a lot, you're already reducing the engine's reliability. If you start carving metal off the block at the same time, you're REALLY reducing the engine's reliability.

Notice that all the aftermarket blocks and heads are HEAVIER than stock parts because of reinforced deck surfaces, thicker main webbing, extra head bolt bosses and a host of other changes to increase the DURABILITY of the engine.

Lighter is a direction you can go ONLY when you can sacrifice durability.

Callies offers CNC Block Lightening. It makes sense if you are using an extra heavy LSX block or an aftermarket block that may be engineered for 2500+HP. If you are building a max effort N/A motor, you may not need all the extra material. Also, when using motor plates you don't need the motor mount bosses. Basically you can remove any unnecessary material from the block to save weight.

We have programs here for the SBC's and it makes tons of sense when rave weight needs to come down. Also when you don't want weight above the chassis. We build a lot of winning engines that are lightened.
