Default Valve spring install problems/question

I am trying to determine if my retainer will smack the top of the valve seal/seat on a BB Olds. I know there are lots of smart people on here so am I in the right direction by saying if my max valve lift is .xxxx i need to have .xxxx + .06 between the top of the valve seat/seal and the top of the spring retainer?

are you talking about compressed spring height?
What valve seals are you using?

With your retainer and lock combo installed on a valve without the spring and with the valve stem and locator installed with shims, measure the distance between the top of the installed seal and the bottom of the retainer with a snap gauge or dial caliper. take that measurment and subtract your max lift to find your clearance (or lack thereof...)

Thanks,
Shane
