Default Valvetrain Damage...

Quick Q and I thought maybe the minds in here would be best to ask.

A friend with a 4.6 mustang recently sent his heads off due to a bent valve..after pulling the heads..you could clearly see impact of valve on piston.....my question is...on a motor with factory internals...and timing chains that show no abnormal slack or wear, how exactly can you have PTV contact?? Do the valvesprings not snap them shut quick enough on an over rev or what?...He wanted expanation and I had none...so Im just trying to help him. Thanks!

I would think that from an overrev he probably had valve float long enough for the piston to smack the valve as the valve springs were probably over-whelmed. I'm not familiar with the 4.6 and how close the valves are to the pistons in stock form.

In my mind, thats the only way you could have PTV...but still...Im suprised that could happen on a motor with stock clearances.

Yes, I've experienced this as well. Piston to valve contact after staying on the rev limiter too long. Definitely valve float will do it.

4.6 have the variable valve timing system in it? If so, did it go south?

could be from a missed down shift the rev limiter is not going to stop a motor from over reving that is being pushed by the rest of the drive train.
