Default broken shifter

I have the A4 Auto in my z28 and the little orange indecatore that tells you what gear you are in now has a mind of it's own. it just slides around in the shifter console by it's self... does anybody have a clue how to fix this or were to start? i can get underneath there... but i haven't got a clue how to removed the cover containing the indicator... i can't figure out how to get the **** off the shifter... <img src="gr_sad.gif" border="0"> really stumped on this one guys any help is greatly appriciated!

There is a little U shaped clip that holds the **** on the shifter (it looks like a thick staple). Use a small screwdriver and pry this clip out of the shift **** (I can't remember whether it's on the engine side or the trunk side of the shifter, but it's down on the neck of the ****).

Once you get the **** off, popping off the A4 panel is cake. Inside there, you should be able to take the rest of it apart and see what's going on.
