Default My JL stealthbox 10w3 crapped out on me!

Recently I began to hear a buzz in my car from the right side passenger area near the hatch. It really started to get bad so this saturday I started to pull the interior apart to try and fine what was vibrating that was causing this problem. I though one of the clips that holds the plastic onto the car was loose, hence vibrating when the bass hit.

Turns out it was my JL stealthbox. Seems the 10w3 **** the bed on me. It sounded like a leaf was trapped between the grill and the sub. So I pull the sub and sure enough, its buzzing more than a rice'd up civic with a 8" exhaust.

The cool thing is I brought it back to the shop that I had bought it (August of 2000) and they sent it out free for replacement. I should have a new one back within a few weeks.

My question is, has this happened to anyone else? Should I just skip the 10w3 replacement and go to a different sub?

Thanks guys.

Sounds like a burnt voice coil. I had the same thing happen to my 10W6 a few weeks ago.

What amp are you using?

The 10W3 is a good sub, but there are better ones out there. <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0"> What are you looking for, sound quality or SPL?

If you're satisfied with how it performed before it crapped out, then I'd take up the offer from your shop and get another one. Where are your gains set on the amp? Are you using the stock Monsoon head unit?

An MTX amp killed mine.. too much distortion. Some of the Japanese amps (Kenwood, Sony, Pioneer, etc) aren't the best in the world and can become a liability after awhile.

EDIT: Let me just add that indeed it shouldn't have crapped out. Since the repair/replacement is free, go ahead and take them up on the offer. If it blows again, then you know to look elsewhere - it's not the sub (likely to be the amp). Make sure your amp is grounded well and that the grounding point is as close to the amp as possible (mine is about 4" away). Might also want to scrape paint off the grounding point to ensure a good ground.

Im using an older (3 year old) Kenwood Performance Standard ps300t (300 watt rms @ 4ohm x1) I have never had any problems with the amp before when I was running a JL Power wedge when it was in my 94 Cougar.
