I was thinking of sanding the red out of the honeycombs, if that will even work. Im gonna be going for an opaque look, would really be sick with LEDs.

Ive been thinking about doing this for along time. Ive researched ways to make the lense. I just never did it yet. I also thought about buying the lt1 tails and sanding the black grid lines off the clear lense? I just dont know if its possible.

It's not possible, as you can see in this picture, the grid and the outer lens are 2 separate pieces. They are simply laminated together to form one piece. Trying to separate the 2 will most likely cause some form of damage to occur to either the outer lens, the grid, or both.

Thats is off of a LT1 TA if you remember the non lt1 V6 birds have a plain red tail and would probably be cheaper to find. I don't know how they work I'm just giving ideas so forgive me if this won't work. It sounds like a cool project though. Good luck.

That wouldn't help any as the OP wants the lens to not be red. Those lights have a solid red lens (minus the reverse portion) that would be impossible to make clear.

Here is an idea:

-Get LT1 TA tail lights
-Remove Red lens
-Take scissors/knife/something sharp, and remove the grid.

Voila! Clear tail lights with no grid.

(Optional step)

Get a honeycomb vinly custom made to cover the lense...and then you have clear LS1 Tail lights (excluding reverse lights). Similar to the one shown below, but for the whole lens.

I wanted to get a lense vacuum formed because I wanted to keep the circle break light in the ls1 tail lights.

Let me reiterate this.. You can not just cut the grid portion out. Unless you want to break off the outer lens, there is no way to simply remove it. The grid and the outer lens are laminated together to form one piece. Unless you know how to and have the tools to de-laminate 2 plastic pieces, then there is no way to do it without something breaking.

Sorry, I didn't read your post clearly enough.

From the picture, it doesn't appear as if they're laminated together.

That's really unfortunate.

Over time they begin to develop whiteish hazy looking spots, which is where the two layers start naturally breaking apart. That was the result of the picture and why they don't look attached.

I'm not sure if that would work, I would have tried it but my oven is too small. That would be really cool if it does. However, it does bring up another problem, being how to reattach the lens without it looking like crap. Superglue and other similar products would easily show through and be an eyesore. Of course you could always have a full size honeycomb decal made that have a 1" or so long border around the edges (as it does already) to cover the glue.

Definitely let us know how it turns out.

You have to use silicone and various clamps to hold it together while the silicone sets.

If you separate the lenses and grid and just cut the black grid. Then instead of re-using the stock"messed up" lense why dont you use what this guy can do:

then you have the grid out of the way and brand new clear lenses with honeycomb vinyl

Okay so I think what im gonna do is use some LT1 tails, cut out the grid and get rid of all the lense. Im gonna cut a peice of lexan and use a heat gun to mold it to the assembly, and then use that honeycomb vinyl, then finally get the lense to look opaque. I thought about just sanding it really rough and then finishing it with a higher grit, but if that doesnt work ill just spray it a really light grey.
