Default How to make SS hood functional?

Im really new to this so please bare with me. I know this might be a stupid question to some you pro's on here but I have a 99 Camaro SS with an aftermarket hood. The hood doesn't have the cutout so I was wondering what I needed to do to make my hood a fully functional SS hood. Is it as simple as cutting it out and applying the grille or is there a kit needed or something else I am not aware of? Whatever the answer may be if anyone could also let me know how difficult it is to do myself if possible?Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

Does the underside of your hood have the "ducts?"

Just drill holes and put a grill on there. You don't have much room to function with this hood. You want function the closest I think your gonna get is with a ultra z hood.

Pretty sure only some did, it was an option from SLP. Mine had that grille too when the previous owner had it i guess.

When you open your hood do you have ducts underneath that direct the air towards the lid? If so All you really need to do is cut out the section of the hood where the grill goes and buy the grill from the stealership. Look to see if they cut the holes in the underside of the hood as well. When the hood is closed these holes will be directly lined up with the air box opening. Have a bodyshop do it if you don't want to hack up your car.

That's not an OEM SS hood, they all had the ram air inlet on the hood where yours doesn't. However, if you have the ducts underneath (they look like rams horns) you can get the hole cut. The SS hood isn't very functional though, because of how the ducts are ran you actually heat up the air in the ducts at idle and it takes about a mile to get cool air through it. Better to do a FTRA and call it done.

Ya the FTRA would be your best bet. I'd still open up the hood, it just doesn't look right like that at all.

heard that!! It just does not look right without the scoop hole, check out the underside of the hood hopefully you have the ducts already there, so you'll be good to go....

Paint the part that goes behind the grill black, then put the grill and be done.

As stated above I wouldn't worry about makin it functional. Even a true SS hood has little to no function. Just get some kind of ram air kit (SSRA, FTRA, SLP etc) They will actually give you some added performance. I would however get a hood grille insert just for appearance..

Thanks for all the feedback guys, I really appreciate it. Anyway here's a picture of the underside. Oh and it would be nice to make it a fully functional SS hood but im mostly interested in the appearance of it so if it's possible for me to just cut it out then I will probably just do that.

Hard to tell in that pic but it looks like you might have to open up the front slits on the underside ducts too.

more than likely whoever made that hood used a factory SS hood to make a mold. highly doubtful those ducts are hollow... can you knock on 'em and check?

like others have said, get some black paint and a grill and make the exterior opening appear legit... then get a good intake

You would have to cut out the portion behind the hood latch too

I can guarantee that its hollow from the looks of it. Do you realize how much fiberglass would be needed to fill those voids? All SS hoods look like that before the holes are cut out. It looks like the company that made this hood forgot to cut it, kinda rare if u ask me. The SS hood is made of 2 shells fiberglassed together, not 1 solid piece.
