Default VHT NiteShade Problems on T/A Third Brake Light

Okay so im having some big issues with vht on my third brake light. I cleaned everything with SEM Plastic wax and degreaser. I sanded with 600, then 1000, then 1500. Sprayed down with SEM Plastic Prep, sprayed vht, and all i get are cracks everywhere in the vht. This is the 4th round of trying different techniques now. Ive tried using adhesion promoter before vht, ive tried 3 coats of clear before vht. Ive tried every way possible, and nothing seems to do the trick. What am i doing wrong? My side markers all turned out perfect. I also did light coats and i allowed proper drying time between coats.

Sorry I don't have a solution. Mine did the same thing. I thought it was just the hair dryer I used to speed up the process...

are u trying to put too much on per coat? Not letting the coats dry long enough before you apply the next one?

If you sand down the plastic too much the plastic releases chemicals that can cause the paint to crack if not properly prep'd.

...I think...lol

the very first time i did it i barely sanded it, prepped it perfectly, and applied very light coats with proper dry time, so idk, but if i were to get a new one anybody know where u can get a new one? gmparts direct said 150+ because u have to buy the entire assembly, is that right? lol i hope not

I have used vht on all my lights except the third brake light. and when i did all mine i just barely scuffed them up with a brillo pad and then sprayed on a few coats of vht to get the desired affect and then sparyed a few coats of dupli color clear coat. and then let it all dry and put them back on the car. didnt have any problems and they look good.

Brent Franker makes decals that black them out and they look much better than vht

its not the vht is something to do with the 3rd brake light i have heard many people have this problem. My side marker lights turned out great and i did them at the same time and prepped hem the same way. Its just something to do with that light.

I never had any of those problems when I did mine. I didnt use anything under the VHT either just scuffed it up with 800 grit and degreaser. When I did my rear/side markers in 2001 I did it the same way and when I had the flames done in 2002 I needed to go back to the original for looks sake in the front. All I did to remove it was ALOT of sanding with the 800 grit and I buffed them back to a high gloss with my P&C and rubbing compound. I later brought the rear markers back to original too using the same method

Hmm...I am doing my tails, corners, and sides on my SS....So basically just take out the lamps...clean them...go over them slightly and evenly with 800 grit...and then layer til happy with darkness, followed by a couple coats of clear...and they should turn out fine?

once again, read my first post, i tried all those things, and i experimented with 2 different third brake lights, my original and the one off my parts car, both reacted the same way, ive pry sanded down and retried everything imaginable. Ive tried using just plastic cleaner then vht, ive tried clearcoat before vht, ive tried adhesion promoter then vht, nothing works, even the clear coat cracks when put on before vht. Ive probably redone both third brake lights at least 6 different ways now, nothing works.
