come on, someone must have a concrete answer. I think the money that Granatelli charges to recalibrate is rediculous. Seems like they could be a bit fairer on thier prices, esp. since it probably takes them hardly anytime at all to do it.

Assuming the length of the needle sweep is the same, you could do some simple math and input a smaller tire size into the PCM to get it corrected. It wouldn't be hard to get the needle to read with in 1 degree of the actual mph.

You can change tire size and differential gear ratio in the ECM, but you can not alter the speedo range (ie: from 120, 150, 200), as the ECM does not control the speedometer, it does calculate the speed of the vehicle for trans functions and CAGS, but it does not send out an MPH signal. So, stop spreading "my buddy's friend's cousin's sister's boyfriend change his with the ECM" bullshit. The gauge cluster receives pulses from the VSS and converts it to a signal the Speedo can use to display a MPH.
I agree with most of what you are saying, but you could get your range to read correctly. The problem is that the odometer and all your speed related functions as mentioned would be totally screwed up.

If you had a 3.42 gear and programmed the PCM for a 4.56 gear, it would look correct on the speedo, but you odometer would be off by 33% as well. The speedo would think you were going 150 and in fact you would be doing 200 mph.

The only way I would do it is like Granatelli did, the right way by reprogramming the cluster.

I know mustang guys that have changed the gears inside the clusters for the needles. Thus a GT cluster to a Cobra R cluster. Only difference was 2 gears in the cluster. Thats mustangs though...

Lightbulb

I wonder if no one replied with an answer for the same reason I didn't at first.

7 years ago I toyed with the idea of installing a ZO6 gauge cluster and, through VERY minimal research, found a FEW places in Fort Lauderdale that specifically recalibrates speedometers.

I didn't have to use that route since I chose to purchase the Granatellis but IIRC the fee was $70-90.

Just do a local search in your respective cities. It's not rocket-science to reprogram a speedo.

Then all the A4 guys will be hitting the limiter at WOT. Not a good solution.

From what I remember, Granatelli wanted to charge upwards of like $150 or so to recalibrate speedo. Thats why I never did it.

You would think it would be just a smaller gear inside the speedo, but I don't know. Does anybody know exactly how it was done? My dad owns an IT company and I'm sure if it was component related they could do it.
