Help with smoking my tails.

I have LT1 style Camaro tail lights that I want to smoke the red section only. I don't want to shade the reverse lights section. I'm not doing a dark blackout just want to darken the red up and then clear and buff over it all. Can anyone tell me what is a good way to do this? I'm guessing tape off the reverse section, spray to my liking of niteshade, then peel tape off after it dries? then clear over everything? I don't want to sand the reverse section for the clear to stick and have it look all faded from sanding. Hmm....

I did mine like this and basically with the same steps.....didnt sand between coats either....it was just a quick little thing to do before i put them on the LS

It looks like you did the reverse of what I want to do, but same thing basically. So you didn't sand before clearing them?

nope.....just layd some thin coats of clear......but since your doing a bigger section I would recommend sanding

you can get blue painters tape and put it over the reverse lights, then use a scuff pad (3m makes them and you cant get them at your local autoparts store). then apply the VHT and clear and then peel off the painters tape. no need to clear the revers lights. thats how i did mine.

cookba do you have any pics of yours? I want the shiny gloss look throughough the whole tail light so you think it is fine to do nothing to the reverse lights? I already have all the materials for it just don't know what process to do. You let the paint dry before you peel the tape off or right after you finish spraying?
