I like the idea of them. Do you have a roll bar, or harness bar to attach them to?

Also, I'm not sure about in your state, but here in Ontario it's illegal to use them.

Not yet I don't. I'm pretty sure it's legal here in Texas as i've seen them on a lot of cars at the races. I just don't want it to look too cheesy

keep your stock seat belts too if you get harnesses. i've never had harnesses but i know i've heard from alot of people that its a pain in the a$$ to use them on the streets, although i do think they look really cool

also, its a good idea to attach them to a roll bar or harness bar because if you attach them to the floor and get in an accident, the angle of the shoulder straps could compress your spine

I love the look of the 4 point harnesses but you've got to do it right if you're going to do it. You need to have a roll bar behind the seats to mount it to. Otherwise it can be dangerous.

Also, you'll need to check and see what the laws are in your area, you may want to keep the stock seatbelt as well as stated above.

Thanks guys! I think i'm going to go ahead and get the roll bar and the harnesses and still keep the regular seatbelts. I can imagine that it gets annoying using the harnesses for daily driving

maybe when I race someone i'll put them on (: haha

The schroth racing rallye 4 is a DOT, NHTSA, and FMVSS approved 4 point that mounts using the factory bolts for the front and rear seat belts. They prevent compressing your spine from the high angle of the belt by having an extra flap sewn into the right shoulder strap which will free up in a crash event to provide a little extra slack on that side to keep your chest moving forward and will also prevent submarining (sliding under the lap belt). It retains the stock 3 point belt and and there is a latch conecting the front and back portions so you can disconnect the font and rear parts use the stock belt and let someone sit in the back seat still if need be.

i have heard that about the one schroth model. but i would bet any cop would give you a hard time about it used on the street, regardless of what the tag says. you could probably get it thrown out in court if given a ticket, but look at the bullshit hassle youd go through. the factory belts are fine for the street. thats why theyre there.

if she gets a harness bar or cage, and just uses a 4/5pt for racing, then thats fine too.

This is just a suspicion, but I doubt it's illegal to use it.

My guess is that it's illegal to use them in place of a factory seat belt. The use of them isn't illegal itself, but it must be used in conjunction with a factory style belt.

What about mounting them straight back to the rear firewall if you are not running back seats?

4 and 5 points are obviously safer than shoulder belts, however, they are not recognized as a legal DOT replacement for stock belts. A cop will still give you a ticket even if you're wearing it and not the car's shoulder belt. You can wear both and have no problem.

I went with the Schroth auto-control harness that was mentioned a few posts up. Its inertial like the stock belts, so you have the freedom to move around while driving, and then it locks up under load. Or you can wire a switch into it, and then you can lock the belts in place at the flip of a switch if you're doing some "spirited" driving. Ive only had them in for a short while, so still getting used to the feeling. Sure I feel a little stupid buckling up in front of people, but they seem to do the job pretty well. Plus they mount in the stock rear belt location, so there was no need for a cage, which is something I didnt want in a DD. Sorry for the shitty pic quality...

I got mine from here http://www.apexperformance.net/CartGenie/prod-1054.htm

They run $229.95 a side from that place which was about the cheapest I found them. Also I actually only ended up going with the drivers side belts. I left the passenger side alone so I could still leave the rear belt in place on that side, so I basically turned the car into a 3-seater.
