i used a wirebrush to clean the surface, then cleaned with simple green to remove any dirt/grease. Use tinfoil to cover anything not to be painted. I had best results when i didn't use primer.

It did take a while but it was well worth it. I used caliper paint and hi-temp clear (several coats of each).
