I have been seeing painted (red) ls6 intakes online and in the new pontiac magazine.
I really want to paint mine when I order it.
What type of paint to use?
sand it?
will paint last on it?
pics of painted intakes?

pics on my webpages
intake off the car, mask the tb and intake ports along with the map sensor in back.
make sure it is clean (not dirty or oily if used
white non sanding primer first
flame red plasti-kote from p-boys
let dry and that is it.

I am going to let the secret out now. O'Reilly has a new high-temp paint called Metal Cast that comes in annodized blue and red. On a non-billet application you have to paint on a "ground" coat to get the "annodized" look. Pretty cool stuff and matches well with my MBA covers/caps. When I did my cam swap I painted my valve covers with it and turned out great. Mark at Raging did the swap for me and also thought it looked good. I am getting ready to do my intake swap and plan on painting it with the blue. When I get the project complete I will post pics. I most likely will paint the TB also. Paint the fuel rails?....dunno.
I think the annodized red would ROCK!!! on the right color car.

Ive seen a few (MARK IXZD 150) people that used automotive paint.. even when the engine is hot the intake dosnet get all that hot and automotive paint can withstand sitting outside in direct sunlight..
The results of the job is directly proportional to how much prep work you do.. like sanding off casting marks and making sure the surface is clean of ALL oils and contaminants.
Good Luck <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

When I had mine painted I left the casting marks on it. If I would have sanded them off, I would have had to sand the entire intake to have the same suface consistancy throughout. The intake was washed, dried COMPLETELY, prepped with the plastic bumper adhesive, then sprayed with the silver PPG automotive paint. The finished product was far better than I ever thought it was going to be. With the casting marks still on it, it give it a factory apperance. A few people that have looked at it have actually rubbed on the casting marks and said "did the car come with this intake?".
See sig for pictures. Not red but will give you an idea of another color

Why not chrome? Street and Performance now offers chromed intakes on an exchange basis as well as chrome fuel lines and injectors. Not cheap though, $950 plus a core charge of $450 for the whole deal. www.hotrodlane.cc

How would I got about removing my intake. I'm not very experienced, but is it only a couple of bolts. Anyone have a quick write - up on this or how many bolts, anyt tubing or fuel lines to be removed, or parts to be covered? I think im going to sand it down maybe, but put a layer of primer on it then high temp cast aluminum just because i have it.
Evil, when you get it done could you please post some pics if you can. Im curious to know how a intake would look clear coated or shiny. THanks
