In the HVAC application - yes. The extra two, side-firing light sources help to send more light through the plastic wave guide, which in turn makes it brighter.

And as stated, the #74 HVAC bulbs I was referring to are definitely plug and play - they are essentially very small circuit boards that just so happen to be the same size and thickness as the base of a standard #74 bulb. Plug it in - if it doesn't light up, just turn it around and try again.
