Default Rear View Mirror Install

I finally gathered up all the parts for the temp/compass/auto-dim mirror, just need a little help on something. The instructions tells me to wire it to a 12 volt accessory hot wire, any guidance on helping me find that particular wire in the dash (A pic would be a GREAT help). I was going to wire it to the hot wire that lead to the mini-lamps on the previous mirror. Am I right on assuming that those wires are always hot?

I plan on doing a write-up during the process as well....

i am not certain if they are or not. but it would be easy to find out just use a muti-meter or a simple test light would work as well

I'm positive they are always hot. I've seen people hard-wire radar detectors into their mirror light wires with no problems. I've thought about it myself.

I need to find one that is switch operated and doesn't stay on all the time.

In the OTHER instructions it says that a CONSTANT power would drain the battery from the mirror from either the temp sensor or compass. I thought that the mirror lights were always hot because you can turn on the map lights at any time, even if the car has sat a while with the engine turned off.....

I'm gonna get a multi-meter and poke around under the dash and see what I find...

Run a wire inside the dash over to the fuse panel and tap into the IGN circuit (only powered when key is on).

There is a diagram on the back of the fuse panel cover.

Post pics when you're done !

Cheers,

What year is your car? Sometime after '00 GM switched the map lights and in turn switched the connectors. Orange wires are usually +12V hot at all times.

Getting a multi-meter from work tomorrow, and jumping into it. I went ahead and placed the mirror on it to check if it fits, no problem there. I found a nice place to mount the temp sensor by the headlight. I was going to run the hot wire out to the engine bay ignition wire fuse box, seems a little difficult to get to. Gonna get the multi-meter and find one under the dash. Found a perfect little hole already in the dash under the steering column, gonna run the wire out there and into a loom to the sensor.

I should be able to finish it up by tomorrow (w/pics), it's just been AFRICA hot here in Kentucky last couple of days.

Lets see. I grounded the mirror to the ground that was on the original mirror. I also attached the third wire to the ground so the auto dim would work.

I ran the two wires for the temp sensor through a hole under the steering column to the front of the car. I hid the wires in the wire loom that ran to the front of the car.

I placed the temp sensor just behind the headlights.
