You would need to take apart your steering column and remove whatever mechanism locks the steering column when the key is out, and then wire in a DPDT relay to simultaneously activate the Ignition power source at the same time as deactivating the starter. This would require more than just a button and a relay, you would need to design a circuit to do it, so that the ignition wire source stays on while the car is running. Then how would you turn the car off? Push the button again? Yes, it would be possible, but would require fabrication of a circuit to do it.

I got a question!

To turn off the car do you just push the button again? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

Constrictor!

Where did you buy the floppy drive power cable that you used? I think the Radio Shack one is going to be too big. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

Also... Would you happen to know how I could wire it up so I could start it without having to push in the clutch, on my M6? I'm pretty sure there is a way. A buddy of mine has remote start on his vette with an M6.

...Doesn't hurt to ask! Someone might know. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Thanks!

Two Questions:

1) I was also wondering about how to turn the car off.

2) If you don't want a Honda Part on your car why not use the one from the new Viper? Is it too big or not compatible??

Thanks <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

If you hit the button again, you'll have to replace your starter motor (probably).

Mobe,

You would have to bypass the neutral safety switch. You can do a search on this site and probably find some info about that. You would have to run a relay so that the neutral safety switch is disengaged whenever the push button is engaged. Actually pretty easy to do.

As for the push-button, next time you start your car, notice that you turn the key to "start" then release and the key turns back towards you. That "start" position is what is being replicated by the button. The button has the EXACT same function as the "start" position for the key, nothing else.

77-vette, I couldn't have put it better myself. This mod is one of those "cool factor" mods that are inexpensive and otherwise useless. That won't stop me from doing it, though!

mhulslan,

I agree! I love the mod and am waiting to get it done in a couple days. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

For the floppy drive cable, go to your local electronics store. Not bestbuy or compusa, but a real computer/electronics store. Take the button with you and they will be able to help you find something. It might take a fan power lead or something of that nature, but you'll find something there.

Project update - security mount

I just had the mechanical engineering lab machine for me an aluminum sleve that fits the button. Also, they were nice enough to remove the pins and replace them with card edge connectors. Instant removable start button!!! Also, it's one hell of a security measure. Once installed, it will look like the lighter is missing. I'll try to get the CAD file for the sleeve for anyone else who has access to the gear to make one.

I usually have some spare parts lying around the house, and I happened to have an old power supply that I wasnt using for anything, so I just cut the power supply cable for the floppy drive off of it.

If you don't have any spare power supplies, look in your phone book and see if theres any computer parts stores in your area. Ask them if they have any old or non-working power supplied lying around and see if they'll cut off the power supply cable for the floppy drive and give it to you.

As for bypassing the clutch cutoff, I can't really help you as I have an automatic. I'm sure it's not hard though.

It works fine, and unless you run into someone who is familiar with the S2000, no one but you (and us) would know you had a Honda part in your car. Its not like it says "Made by Honda" on it or anything.
