Default 6LE: Any interest in steering wheel work?

Was gonna shoot you guys an email about this but I figured I'd just post a thread..

I was looking at Vette steering wheels, but they're around $800 for custom wrap with a $250 core charge. I'm wondering if you guys could ever entertain the thought of doing steering wheels for us? Prolly a core charge also.

Here's what I found.. Grant makes steering wheel replacements to work with the stock bag, but nothing for our mullet rides.

This is the 2006-2011 Wheel.

And don't mind this idiot... He said "They've been going without since 2004."

Would be nice if there was an affordable option,as the stock steering wheel is not the best looking.

^ Meh.. I'm just looking for something a tad more sporty. The stocker is a bit hard. My hand fits perfectly in it's no0ks, but if I could do a C6 wheel cheap and easy I'd jump on it.

I wish I could get a wheel with a little bit smaller diamiter, I still plan to drive mine on the street so I am holding off on losing the air bag, I really dont want to run into issues getting it inspected, HOWEVER if anyone knows how to add a quick change system where I can swap from stock to aftermarket wheels then im down for that

This has been explored before somewhat, but I would really just love to put a G6 wheel in our Trans Ams. If there was any way to pull the airbag out of our cars and put it in a G6 wheel I would be all over it. It would be cheap if it could be done. Using the stock airbag would remove all issues with compatibility

I've been dying for one for myself for awhile. I've been trying to figure out how to make a new style wheel for our cars WITH an airbag but just keep hitting dead ends.

My main thoughts were to use a Mustang wheel to be honest...

Classic styling with airbag.

^ To each his own, ya know? We may be able to get the Vette bag to work. Not sure how different the connections are.

why couldnt you take a G6 wheel and swap out the pin connector for the airbag? wouldnt that work?

is the G6 steering wheel a direct fit onto our columns?

There was another member who was going to do wheel wrapping but that never worked out I guess.

Honestly I don't like that mustang wheel too much I liked the wheel design in my 98 with no wheel radio controls actually, some people probably thought I was nuts but I liked it. Just needed recovering badly because the fake leather was worn and the rubber was deteriorating lol.

^ I have no idea about the pin connector. I'm real leary about working around an airbag anyway. I've had one go off before, but it was from an accident. .........it's a mini bomb.

The problem with switching pin connector or putting in an airbag from something else is there's no way to test it or know for sure if it will go off when you need it.

Funny I was thinking about this exact topic a while ago. Retro fitting a C6 style wheel that has been modded.
The GM partsbin steering wheel will fit though, I found this pic a long time ago, hideous interior, but the wheel is there...(see attached pic at bottom)

edit: God Id love something like this:

You can bolt the wheel and airbag right on, but the bag will not communicate with the F body deployment module.

So will it fit on the stock steering column?

That would be AWESOME if someone could make that GM partsbin wheel work WITH the airbag. I would swap right away. That plus a 6LE gauge overlay + bezel would go a LONG way towards making a 4th gen feel a lot more modern.

at first i was wondering about this, but then i was thinking how if not, then i'm sure someone could make some sort of adapter. my focus is now concentrated on making the airbag workable and 2nd the steering wheel controls.

if we got a truck or even corvette one from 4th gen fbody era, or a few years later, wouldnt the pins match up?

Doesn't seem like it would be that hard to make the air bag work. They are all just based off a power/ground set up right? You'd just need to know off our cars which is the power trigger and on the replacement air bag which is the power trigger...

I mean, if we could do this...

http://www.youtube.com/user/markdeli.../7/NVpZ6O5eS5Y

I'm sure it can be done.
