Default Firebird License Plate Cover Replacement

I'm hopefully having the front end of my formula repainted soon, and I need to replace the license plate cover. My car is white and i've found a few covers for sale, but none are my color.

What kind of prep work needs to be done to the cover before being repainted? It looks like it would be near impossible to sand it all down with the raised firebird, so is there some kind of liquid compound that is used to pull the paint off?

TIA.

Prep and paint is pretty simple on the front cover...

Do you want to completely remove the raised bird section??

If so, that will be a bit tough since they're made from a raised mold (it's hollow behind each raised piece)...

Not impossible, but you'll have to be good with fiberglass resin filler for a solid fill and use a D.A. to sand everything completely straight...

As for just prepping a regular cover for paint, start off with an abrasive Scotchbrite pad, Comet (yes, the powdered tub cleaner) and water...

You don't need to completely remove the paint, just scuff the entire cover really good and make sure the primer you use cures properly before you start wet sanding...

Here are a couple links showing how I prepped and painted clear covers without a primer base...
