Stupid question maybe.....But do you leave the engine running when you wash it? Or turned off, or what? If im using a hose to rinse it off, what areas do i avoid? I know the pcm, fuse boxes and such. But what else?

Your engine needs to be cold before water gets in contact with it. If not, you may crack the block. Just some words of precaution. That way you won't be .

Try to keep water away from the bottom of the intake. The knock sensors sit in little holes under the intake and water will sit in that hole, messing up the sensor. Happened on my car along with a few friends.

Never spray a hot motor and never use strong degreaser while the motor is anything but warm.

Best stuff to use is Simple Green. Get the motor warm to the touch, cover (or just avoid directly spraying) the electrical parts, spray the motor, let it sit for a minute or so, use a brush to loosen heavy dirt, spray everything off, hand dry what you can and let the motor run for a few minutes to dry the rest.

i used simple green and a pressure washer on its lightest setting. Just make sure to cover the pcm very well, i cut up a thick yard work style trashbag and used thick *** rubber bands and put the plastic over teh altenator and pcm. and i avoided spraying the sides of the motor where the plugs, wires and coil packs are directly. I let the car sit for a few hours after onlyd riving it for 10 minutes to pick up some simple green. (it was 50 degrees out) i think i let it set for about 4 hours. i sprayed lightly the entire motor then rinsed it all off, once again i made sure not to spray the coil packs, altenator, pcm, and plug area directly. and i switched from the pressure washer to a regular hose with a nossle on it to gently rinse off those sensative areas.

it looks pretty good, cleans up all the extra grime and dirt but the thing is, i still got the coil packs and it seems wires are everywhere on these motors. do you guys think if i used some convoluted tubing and covered up the wiring with some fancy smancy colors and perhaps picked up some fuel rail covers it would enhance the apperance under teh hood?

I usually clean the motor every other time I wash the car - keeps it looking nice under there. I either use Gunk engine cleaner (GREAT stuff) or Mag 2001 Cleaner (wheel cleaner). One is for breaking up engine grime, the other for breaking up road grime - both will work just fine.

I spray it, let it sit for a minute or two, then run over most of the inside with a light-brissle brush and regular car wash soap (you CAN spray and rinse, but it's just flat out not going to do as good a job).

Just don't use Engine Brite. I think Gunk makes it. **** started eating my Whisper lid . Had to paint it after that. On the other hand, it was caustic enough to pull the corrosion off my 3 year old heads and make them shine like they had 10 miles on them. I have never found that CD2 stuff in GA ,dammit, where is it?

No problems with the electrical stuff? It sounds like a scary process!
