The bulbs that are readily available right now look kinda silly, since they will just illuminate one little red dot about the physical size of the bulb. Once someone developes a bulb (cheaper) where the LED's face more than just one direction would look better, and shine off the interior lens reflector , like a normal bulb.

There are some drop in replacements available, but they usually have the problem that Xsta Z 28 mentioned. APC and JamStrait are two companies that come to mind. The APC ones should be available in an auto parts store but they are low quality. Whenever replacing incandescent (regular) bulbs with LEDs, the flasher will also have to be changed. The flashers on our cars are thermal and wont operate properly with LEDS due to the decreased load. They will have to be replaced with electronic flashers. One such flasher is the Tridon/Stant EL12 Flasher available at PepBoys and AutoZone. There are some places online (maybe JamSrait) that sell replacements that produce a wider spread of light so as to minimize the "spot in the middle" issue. These replacements generally have a dozen or more LEDS, some of which at a different angle than the rest. They also cost more (like $40+ each).

Here is a thread about creating a whole taillight assembly instead of just bulbs:
