Default Z28 ground effect removal

how hard is it to remove the RS ground effects on a Z28? i am thinking of buying a car with the ground effects but i want to remove them. i know there will be some paint work involved but i dont mind it. i just want to know what how hard it will be and what is behind the ground effects.

thanks for all your help.

I've been seriously considering this too... From what I see, there are 3 or so plastic pins which hold the gfx on at each end (in the tire well) and there are little hooks which the gfx hang off which run down the side of the frame.

it all depends on if i buy the car or not. if i buy it they are comming off for sure. i dont like the way it makes the car look IMO. my biggest concern is the paint under the gfx. i dont mind some paint work but dont want to do it if i dont have too.

I have the factory ground effects on my car.
I've had the car for 14 months and not once have the ground effects scraped on anything.

My car was just in the body shop and the right side ground effects were off. Leaving them off would mean some sheet metal work and some paint work would be necessary, as the pieces are held on by several small rivets.

To me the ground effects give our cars a more aggressive stance. They were a big reason why I bought my car. From what I've heard, they are a b*#ch to take off! I would keep them on.

They are easy to remove, but they leave nasty looking holes behind. But still worth it IMO

thanks a bunch for the pics. that is easy body work to tackle. i have not bought the car yet because i gotta dump my 2002 Maxima ($13000 if your interested). the car was hit light in the passenger door and rocker. it busted that side skirt. if i buy the car i will be taking the gfx off and will sell all for very cheap. the rest of them are perfect.

thanks for all the help.....

I had em' on my last Z(factory option) and I never cared for the way they looked. Kinda makes the Camaro look like an oversized boat IMO.

But...Why don't you just find another car without them? Like the other guy said, there are a ton of freakin' holes and they'll all have to be filled in and painted. I wanted to do this as well, but my local(and very good) body shop strongly recommended against me having them removed. Not worth it.

Good luck,

Mike

looking for another car is an option but i have not run across to many 02 Z28 with 521 miles for $10500. yes the car has a rebuilt title and i will have to fix the rocker and door anyway so the body work doesnt really matter. i am wanting to build a street strip car so i dont see the point in buying a good title car and voiding a warranty.

I don't quite understand why you would buy a car with ground effects just to turn around and take them off. Wouldn't it be a lot easier to buy a car that doesn't have ground effects? IMO Camaros just look too plain without the ground effects, looks like every other Camaro. I personally like to have a car that is different from the rest(that looks good), not one that I'll confuse with another car in a parking lot, again that's just my opinion.

like i said before its all about price. if i could find another 02 Z28 with 521 miles on it for $10500 that didnt have gfx i would buy it. i will have this car completly fixed with out gfx and with a full exhaust, stall, gear, lid, and programing for under $13000. i cant beat that. i can have a 2002 Z28 with under 1000 miles running low 12's for $13000. it sounds like my best option right now. i am in no hurry so something else may come up... who knows...

Well, personally I liked the ground effects when I bought the car. But after a while I got tired of them. They made the car look tacky. Yeah so I'm stuck with some holes, maybe I'll use the $500 I got from the ground effect to fill in the holes.

I mean...They look fine(give the Camaro a racier look), but I just prefer the Camaro without em'. Back in '93 when the 4th generation design came out, no Camaro's came with GFX up until the RS models of '96. Again, I like the sleek/thin look of the standard Camaro body. Ground effects make them look too bulky IMO.

But, if this car is really that nice of a deal for you(which it seems like it is), I say buy it. They might just grow on you anyways.
