the brush...... bad idea. simple green is harsh but shouldnt have done it, although i would have tested a spot where you couldnt see first. normal car wash soap would have been a better idea watching you dont get water all over the electronics

If you just let it sit then rise it. I just use soap and water with a brush. Sometimes simple green can take paint off just soaking you can dilute it with water just to be safe

Did you dilute the simple green? The toilet brush is too aggressive.

Simple Green and a brush is not harmful at all. Evidently the paint was loose already and the brush made it flake off.

Simple green is also corrosive to aluminum if you let it sit too long...use Gunk Engine Bright...and a VERY VERY soft bristle brush if you use one at all.

Save the brushing for the engine itself. Use a rag and toothbrush (at worst) to clean the painted surface.

I stand corrected, Simple Green will remove paint. Some people use it as a paint stripper. I never knew this and I'm shocked since I have used it on many cars. I'll definitely be more careful with it from now on.

I have used simple green a number of times to keep my engines clean (as in maintenance). If needed I used a toothbrush to help lift dirt in certain areas. I would only let it set for about 15-20 seconds before rinsing it off generously. I have never had any paint issues. And I never diluted it. The main issue is to not let it sit too long. Simple Green is powerful stuff.

However, after reading this thread I may switch to something else.

We use Simple Green to clean out 155mm howitzers in the Marines and I've never seen it strip the paint. And it's not like that military paint is anything special either.

I've used Simple Green but did not feel at all comforabtle so now I only use Engine Bright and if it has to take a little more work to get clean, I'll put in the little extra work just to make sure nothing like this happens.

this is why you use the right products for your car, why have a nice car and then try to go out the cheep way to clean it? it makes me cringe when i see people washing there cars with a wash cloth and bucket of dirty water, and they use dish soap.

use the proper products to clean your ride, and for what it is worth a mr clean dry eraser works wonders on parts you can even clean your suspension with it. for under the hood I would use the same soap I wash the car with and some kind of non abrassive brush. I wouldnt put simple green on my car for anything, I dont even like using paper towels with windex to clean my windows
