Default Broken dash pad fixed and wrapped

My dash pad finally broke a couple weeks ago. I had it covered with the 'hated' dash mat for years, but after the pad broke I couldn't leave it like that. Here are the before and after pics. I basically followed one of the stickies about repairing the dash pad, this was my first shot at it so I was pretty pleased. I like it much better than the dash mat cover that was on there. Over all it took me about 2 days to complete, and used some vinyl material from the local craft store. I think now that I know how to repair it, I may do another one in real leather or see how some Di-noc carbon fiber material works.

I fiber-glassed the top and bottom to make it extra strong. The top took a lot of sanding to get smooth again.

Mine was actually fine for over 10yrs, but one night while racing my buddy in his 2010 SS Camaro we had to brake hard for a light. I heard a snap from the dash, and when I checked it the pad was broken into 3 places. I have upgraded brakes and larger rotors up front so it nose dived quicker than a stock brake set up would. Other than that event the dash has with-stood Florida heat for over a decade with no problems.

That really turned out nice! It has a plush look to it, like a more expensive car might have. Takes away some of that plastic-y look our GM interiors are infamous for. Two thumbs up, excellent job of taking what ya got at hand and making it work again.

Jesus, that must be a powerful *** brake system you have there if it breaks your dash in pieces like that. You fixed it up extremely well, good **** my man.

Thanks, the vinyl had a little too much shine for me so I toned it down with a gentle rub with a rag and paint thinner. It gave it more of a natural leather look and blended better with the rest of the interior. For some reason the pics show up a little glossier that it really is. I think next I may be doing the T-top headliner wrapped as well with the vinyl, cause I hate the cheap fabric crap GM used on the headliner.

Damn that looks good. I'm getting ready to do mine. About how much did it run you said and done? Also, what did you use as a screen for the air vent?

It was about $70 for everything, fiber-glass/resin, vinyl material, and 3M 90 spray adhesive. The screen is the aluminum stuff (painted black) for gutters I had laying around as a temporary cover till the other metal screen comes in. I made a template of the vent, cut out the screen, and rolled the edges of it so it doesn't look cheaply thrown in for now.

What other metal screen do you plan on using? The main reason I'd rather replace my dash than repair it is I haven't seen any clean replacements for the vent.

Is there any sort of UV protection in or on the vinyl or is it gonna get kinda faded after a while?
