Window tinter wants to spray top part of rear window
We have a very good window tinting place in town, guys been doing it for like a thousand years etc... but I'm wondering if anyone has had this done. He says that if he tints the rear window the textures shading **** at the top will cause it to look like crap and he wants to use this spray on stuff (basically VHT I guess). From the outside it matches the tint but from the inside it looks like the top third or so has been painted. Has anyone else had this done? Or if you have regular film on the rear window has the factory textured stuff turned into "diaper rash" as he put it?

The texture is called a dot matrix. You can tint over them and it won't peel off but it doesn't look the best from the outside. Some people put black vinyl over the dots or try to sand them off. I don't think I would want the inside of my window painted black.

Never heard of that. The last few 4th Gens, that I've had done, my local Tint guy uses black vinyl and from the outside you can't tell the difference. The DOT matrix looks great with it also, nothing like it does when you tint over it.

If you tint right over the Dot Matrix there's a real good chance you'll get air bubbles in that area. I've heard of people doing it without air bubbles, but I've never seen it myself.
I tinted my windows myself and spray painted the inside of the glass right over the dot matrix with some good 'ole Duplicolor rattle cans. From the outside it looks identical and from the inside you lose a small amount of visibility. But, there's not one single air bubble in it.
IMO putting vinyl on the outside is a cheap way out. You'll have this beautifully tinted rear glass and a giant black sticker on the outside of your car. I think it'd just look cheap.

Ok thanks guys, I wasn't sure if this was a common thing or not. Basically he does just like the picture posted with something made by 3M. He says it's "permanent" but acetone will take it off.

This is true, My tint guy was awesome, does it on the side himself, and it has been on my car for 7 years with no problems, no bubbles at all on the rear. I watched him do it, he just took his time to make sure everything was perfect. Even got the windshield tinted 35% as well.

I had my tinted 3 years ago, and when I picked it up I noticed the bubbles on the dot matrix area on rear glass. He said the bubbles would go away after a few days, they only seemed to get worse. Took it back, and the owner said it's normal for tint to not adhere to that area of the glass because of the dots so therefore couldn't do anything about it. I spoke with every tint guy in my area and they agree with my tint guy. I considered spraying it black because the bubbles look like crap from the outside. The vinyl strip idea, is that applied to the inside or outside of the glass?

this is one of the biggest reasons I haven't tried to tint my car yet.
the other is that I need a new door on the driver side.
I worry about finding a good guy tho. I asked several people about the dot matrix since a lot of cars these days have em, and if the shop is unsure if they can hide the air bubbles, or tells me I'll just have to deal with them.. I move on. so far, they have ALL said that.
at least this guy is trying to fix it. I dunno about paint, I think vynil would be a better idea, since it can be removed later.
I can't imagine hatch glass is cheap. (though it is abundant in salvage yards..)

My tinter always scraped the dots with a razor blade. I took that this was a very acceptable alternative to doing something fancy with it. He has been doing it this way for years but gives the forewarning to owners that the dots can cause problems as time goes on. An accepted risk IMO.
