Default Differences in center consoles?

Ok so I'm drawing plans up for a custom center console. I know they switched the styles from the '93-'9(7?) to the later years, but my first question is, is the actual shifter automatic/manual in the same position regardless of the styling changes of the rest of the console? Which leads to my second question I'm thinking of using the "base" of second center console (so as not to ruin my original) to build around, and right now my car is an automatic, so is that shifter surround/upper trim that pops off the only difference between automatics and manuals? Or is the WHOLE console completely different regardless of that shifter surround/upper trim piece that pops off?

Well the '97 is the same as the '98-'02, but to answer your first question I believe it is and second and the automatic to manual console is different, the ash tray is in a different spot and that may be it. Try searching for pics to get a better idea.

that's a manual center console. It's from the newer interior style, but you get the idea.

Hey thanks for the response, but that is what I'm talking about as I know that between the manual and automatic the layout of the cupholders/ashtrays/etc was different. It's hard to explain and I should have showed a picture, but you see how that area around the shift is separate and pops off? That's my main concern, as I want to make sure that is the only difference as it APPEARS the "base" are the same regardless of automatic/manual is what I'm trying to get at. Reason why I'm so concerned is I eventually plan on doing a manual swap, and want to incorporate the shift surround to easily pop out/change like it does stock for whenever I go to a manual if it indeed is just that area that is different between the two and not the WHOLE console.

Its the same thing. Just the ashtray and shifter location is switched.

Heres a thread about doing the swap from a4 console to m6.

Thread doesn't have confirmation about the shifts into 1 & 2nd gear but maybe pm the guy if it works.

The console is in two pieces, an upper and a lower part.

The lower part of the console (the large part) is the same for manual or automatic. The only thing that changes is the upper part.

The upper part is held in by two screws inside the center consloe ( under arm rest lid). The ash try location moves because of shifter location.

If you buy a manual console and have an auto, all you would need would be the upper half of the console. The lower part could stay.

The console changed in 97. There are color differences though. Grey, charcoal, and ebony.

Hope this helps.

pretty much the "base" is the same on all models. The trim that pops out is the part that is different for manual/automatics.

Here is my custom center for the cyberdyne digital gauges I made.

I haven't finished painting it but you get the idea. Ernest
