Default Paint Correction Thoughts on '02 Z28

Hi Guys,
I started doing some paint correction on a Black '02 Z28, it desperatley needed it! The paint was really bad, and almost looked blue. Here's the process I went through, and I would appreciate some advice from some of the veterans on here on how to improve. But, for my first attemps, I figured it wasn't bad, so give me some feedback!

- I started by wetsanding with 3M 1500, then 2000.
- Then, I used a 3M Perfect-It Wool compounding pad with Meguiar's Ultimate Compound.
- Next, I went with a 3M Perfect-It black foam polishing pad with Meguiar's Ultimate Polish.
- Finished off with some wax for protection.

Only did front half of the car, you can see the difference between the fender and door.

Now, how do I get these small swirl marks out of the paint? Switch to a finer polish? Any advice is appreciated.

From the very little I know of paint correction I do know that you skipped a step or two inbetween wetsanding and your ultimate compound. I'm not going to get into pads but you need to do a Meguiers M105 or Heavy cut in there first. Then either the M205 or Ultimate compound. See this chart.
You may even need to up your grit number but I'm not real sure how high they go. Like I said, I'm a noob.
Here's a good comparison chart.

I would say you should've kept sanding until 3000 grit the try the m105/205 combo.

2000 is fine, just harder to buff than 3000

Why make life harder finishing with 2k grit? I always take it to at least 3k.

And second, why are you sanding (I assume) factory paint? Not a good idea for the life of your paint. Taking out swirls and scratches can be done much safer than "cutting and buffing" the whole car.

Damn, hope you didn't make your clear coat too thin. On another note, bring it up to 3000 grit, it'll do some of the polishing for you and make it a bit easier. Necessary? No, but not a bad idea!

Meguiars M105, and Menzerna SIP have never failed me. A lot of people (including GoFast^ and myself) use M105 and switch right to Menzerna SIP with a flawless finish.

Are you guys using a wool or foam pad for the initial cutting/buffing process ? Ive had my PC for over a year now with some basic foam pads (white, blue, black) not sure of their aggressions but I usually use the white pad. My cars look shinier but i know that they could look better , especially my black Maxima ..

I have a PC 7424, flat foam pads. You need an orange pad for the initial cut. i.e. Orange pad with M105, then white pad with Menzerna SIP/M205.

What he said. Or a yellow if you really need some cutting power instead of the orange.

Nothing to add to the thread that's important or anything but when I saw that one pic of your car OP sitting in the field, I thought you had messed it up but I realized it was the reflection of the weeds, haha.
