Default Trans Am seat question

My interior is in mostly good shape except for the bottom of my drivers seat. The leather is torn and the padding feels pretty gone. I would like to fix both of these issues because I can't find a set of seats that I feel look right inside the car that don't cost a small fortune. So can I buy a new foam bottom and a new bottom cover?

I believe your choices are to either search craiglist/junk yards for a used one in decent shape, or go to a good upholstery shop and have them redo the foam and make a new bottom, but you;ll be well on your way to new seat prices by then I would imagine.

you would be amazed what steam does to foam. I worked at An upholstery shop and we would do that to double the size of foam before recovering em.

Without taking it apart to be sure I think where mine is torn in the leather, it is also missing a good chunk of foam. It just feels like that so that's why I just wanted to get a new cushion instead.

I saw a thread on here a few weeks ago where the guy had a new lower foam but I can't remember where he got it.

Is it possible to make foam expand AFTER leather covers are installed? The seats from my Trans Am GTA just recently got new leather but they don't look as tight as they COULD be. Any advice?

I wouldn't say its impossible but I was advised to keep the steam away from the covers to avoid the risk of burning the covering material. personally I wouldn't risk hurting those nice covers. I would pull the foam back out to do it if I redid it at all.

Carlos,

Are you referring to the wrinkles in the leather? If so a lot of them will go away after the leather relaxes.

Very nice seats BTW.

Thank you. Yeah, I know the wrinkles will go away in time, but the leather still seems like it could be a little more tighter. The seat's foam is 22 years old, though... guess I really can't expect too much.

You will have to get foam and shape it. There's a good write up on here how to do it. I haven't done it but it doesn't look that hard at all.

Well FML. Looks like I am stuck with uncomfortable seats or buying overpriced "racing" seats that don't fit right or need overpriced brackets to fit.

No problem. I didn't remember who started the thread. I searched for how to, and foam and got lucky.

Hopefully it will help you out.

Most of the time, you don't need to replace the foam.

The foam sits on thin wires that cut into it. Disassemble the seat bottom. Put something thin/flexible/sturdy between the wires and foam. Reassemble.

In my case, I used some old screen material and aluminum tape that I had lying around to wrap the wires into a flexible metal shelf for the foam to sit on instead of just bare wires.

What I did was go to the junk yard and pulled the foam from a passenger seat, since those are the mostly the ones in good shape and used it on the driver side.

That's actually a really good idea. I will have to look for one on ebay though since the junkyards here are full of the **** that not even the ghetto wants..

It's too bad that the camaro seats don't have the same cushions as I have a full set of grey leather camaro seats out of an SS that I could pull apart. That and a pair of Corbeau seats as well. I guess I could sell both to fund a new set of seats..
