Default 3D Printer Ideas/Suggestions

So we're getting a 3D printer at work soon that can print 8x8x8" ABS/PLA. What are some good ideas that I can use this thing for car-wise?

FYI, as my work has a 3D printer that I use--the best way to make printed parts smooth is to dip them quickly in acetone. Beats sanding all the nooks and crannies.

As emblems are small/fragile, be careful the direction you lay down material. The ideal would be diagonally for best strength I would think.

I think another great idea would be to print HVAC *****. It doesn't sound like the printer can do transparent materials? I wish my work would have spent the $250,000 on an Objet printer, I could have made lightable HVAC ***** with a strip of clear for us Firebird guys...

Out of curiosity, what 3D CAD do you use? We're Solidworks.

These are some shift ***** I did a while back using ours, modeled to mimic the factory Hurst shifter. (The red was just for fun)...the issue with curved pieces is that printers can only place layers so fine. Ours does 0.005" layers so it is a pretty decent printer and you can still see the layers. With a little acetone or sanding, they would probably look good though.

FYI the bumps on the red one were from a dirty tip on our printer.

I'm actually a software developer for a major card processing company, we just had a bunch of us at work in our IT department throw in together on one for the office for personal use. It's a Solidoodle gen 4 3D printer, prints 8x8x8 size, and ABS or PLA, so emblems, *****, shift ***** should be no problem. Not sure how a plastic shift **** would feel though.

Intakes would be great, if it were large enough, especially for us LTx guys. However the 8" size, and the environment under the hood (heat, chemicals) limits that.

Window switches, radio switches, ac vents, etc. Little parts like the big plastic screws that go on the rear interior panels that get fucked up.

You can do a lot of things. It's up to your imagination really. I made my own dash plaque. Here is mine installed. I need to sand it and paint the letters though.

If you can make the switch plate where the TCS button is, I can throw some cash your way.

They are pretty much obsolete these days, I'm sure many are interested in those.

We just got it in the office last Friday, still have a long list of people who want to print on it. So far as my 1st test piece I printed a 6" Dark Knight batarang, which came out pretty decent except for one side which started curling up. The next thing, 1st car related thing that I am going to print is going to be a small plate (1 3/8" x 5/8") for the console with the correct shift pattern given that my console is out of a 5-sp and I have a 6-sp. Once the waiting list dies down I may start printing things off for people here and there, but for now I'm still experimenting with it. Some good ideas here so far.

Contraststriker, do you happen to have any of the files for the shifters that you did, I may try a custom one of those as well.

I made my own nitrous switch panel on the one at my school. Came out pretty cool, and saved me a few dollars.
