Default Clear coat removal during compounding measurements

Figured I would do a quick right up of the amount of material being removed when doing a somewhat aggressive paint correction.

The test subject was my daily '08 Ink metallic blue Ford fusion. As far as clear coat hardness I would say it's the middle of the road.... not way soft, not way hard. In my experience Ford paints are really nice to work with.

All my measurements were taken in microns.
25.4 microns = .001" inch

To get a rough estimate on how much clear is on the car I took a measurement under the hood where they do not clear. Then I took a measurement inside the door where they spray just a very light coat of clear due to not needing much protection. And last I took some measurements on my hood test spot.

Starting point results:
- Under hood/ no clear: 55 microns
- Inside door: 70 microns
- Hood: Reference picture/ color dots below.

Starting point (color dots represent measuring points)
- Red: 117 microns
- Green: 122 microns
- Purple: 116 microns

After 3 passes:
- Red: 115 microns
- Green: 120 microns
- Purple: 115 microns

After 6 passes:
- Red: 113 microns
- Green: 118 microns
- Purple: 113

After 9 passes:
- Red: 111 microns
- Green: 117 microns
- Purple: 112 microns

Equipment & supplies:
- 21mm throw da
- Menzerna 400
- Buff and Shine yellow foam cutting pad.

Results after the first 3 passes:

End results:

Polishing isn't a huge concern but I did flatten some orange peel over time.
I was on a forum years ago when wetsanding was all the rage. Guys didn't realize they were sanding away all the UV protection.

Maybe today I will do another one with wet sanding with 3000 grit on a da and finish it out.
