Default carbon fiber really worth it?

hey,
i was thinking of getting a new hood, front end, and spoiler made. Is carbon fiber really worth the money? Is it really that much lighter than stock and is it really as durable as they say? do you have to be careful who you choose to make your carbon fiber parts?

thanks in advance

I don't think its but maybe a couple pounds lighter than fiberglass, if that. Definately not worth the price.

I wouldn't spend the extra money either....unless you're a HARDCORE racer.

if you do your research, carbon fiber (made correctly) is extremely durable and should outlast your expectations. "is it worth it" depends on how much you want to spend. it will be lighter and more durable to answer your question. you might want to consider why you want carbon fiber to begin with.

fiberglass only "falls apart" if it's made like crap. boats don't "fall apart" or bathtubs don't "fall apart". just consider the source.

hope this helps

i heard of a new vette with a c/f hood on it that burned to the ground, and the only thing that survived was the hood!!! the paint and resins melted/burned off, but the material was supposed to be in such good condition that it could be reused for something else.

by the way, i have a c/f 3" raised SS hood from VFN for sale, bolt on. it's the paintable type, not the import style one where you can see the pattern. it's brand new, and never been painted. new is $1338!!!!! i'm letting it go for $900. i'm taking nearly a 33% loss. the new car i just got has a pin on already for now, and when the 427 goes in, i will have to measure and see what size i need then. again, this is NEW, and untouched since i picked it up from VFN. this is the least expensive c/f hood you will possible ever find.

thanks,
Dave

pm me if interested. i have one member who is, but has made no definate yes or no. first come first serve. i also have the factory OEM grill insert for it, included.

hmm, i dont know if i like the VFN 3" ss hood, kinda gaudy, i have seen a few ws6 ta's with the 3" hood and they loook like total ****, sorry if anyone has one, but, i really dislike them, i would rather have stock hood.... I am thinking about going with a ULTRA Z with a little bit higher and maybe a little wider "bulge" or "cowl" whatever you would call the back portion of the hood, i think that would look pretty sleek just a little taller scoop in the front maybe, not much

Yes its lighter.. But it doesnt seem to be worth it just for the weight savings unless you just HAVE to save a couple more pounds and you have the $$ laying around..

It does look cool though

the only carbon fiber that is rice in my opinion is the kind where you can see the pattern. i personally don't care for that myself. and as far as durability goes, anyone ever seen a fiberglass hood after it's been dropped? can you say ruined!

later,
Dave

I'd just get the fiber glass one, unless like stated earlier you just have the extra money laying around, or u just wanted to say you had a carbon fiber hood. Yea carbon fiber is only rice when u see the pattern, the Enzo is almost all carbon fiber and thats definatly not rice!

If your goal is to make the car as light as possible, then yeah. Otherwise an unpainted CF hood is "Japey".
I'm considering one next Summer when my car goes on a "race only" diet. Target is 3100 raceweight, so every bit helps (CF, lexan and all the rest)

This forum is turning into CamaroZ28.com and that's NOT a compliment. You people need to learn what "rice" is. Jesus christ, do we need a refresher on what rice is?

"Putting something on your car to make it look fast."

Putting a carbon fiber hood on the car "for show" is not rice unless they say "That hood makes my engine run better" when all it is is fiberglass overlayed with carbon fiber.. i.e. no weight reduction. I love the look of carbon fiber, and would do my entire car in "finished / show" carbon fiber.. that's not rice, that's appearance.

Until then, all you freaks that use rice so loosely, do yourself a favor and take after the lead of this smiley...

Let's compare the Titanic... a ship made out of metals... to a fiberglass boat.. falling apart. Am I the only one that sees the utter stupidity of this?
