My compromise solution was to shrink the size of the plate as much as possible. I also built a custom bracket which allows me to completely (and easily) remove the plate/bracket- it's held on by 3 wing nuts from the bottom. I'd still rather not be pulled over for missing my front plate so I leave it on most of the time (it still looks better without, obviously):

It's illegal here in MO, however my car has never had a front plate, the former owner got pulled over once and i've never got pulled over for it. I'll been pulled over for speeding but the cop has never noticed the lack of a plate. I've had cops complement my car at a gas station once, never said a thing about no plate.
