Default Clay bar on a black car....

...I have a black T/A and I was planning on clay barring the car sometime and polishing and waxing, but one of my friends says that clay barring is a bad idea on a black car because it leaves a bunch of tiny scratches.

I didn't think it would but I didn't feel like getting in a pissing match, figured I'd ask you guys...

i actually just clay barred my car today and i didn't see any little scratches. Maybe when he saw it, the person was pressing the clay bar and not just letting the clay do its magic. It looks so badass when its done, i definately recommend doing it. I used Mothers kit, it looks fine to me and cost $18 at autozone. Good luck on whatever you choose.

Here's the only real close-up I could find. This pic was taken right after I claybarred and before I waxed. It's the hood. Tell your friend he's wrong.

Here's another to help out another black non-WS6 TA owner.

If you are scratching the car while claying, you aren't doing it correctly.

Very light pressure and lots of lubrication are the key to successful claying.

Is that first one on a car or a mirror?

If he is getting scratches with the claybar most likely it was because the clay was too dirty; they dont last forever....need to be changed out periodically.

Ya you have to fold the clay bar over and over to make sure it is clean. I clayed my friends Black T/A and it looked great.

not exactly but the cleaner wax, polish and wax will!!! Well then again I have notices a few really fine scratches to be missing after the claybar but then again I never really paid it much attention.

Okay, but the polishing afterwards will bring the shine back and hoepfully remove all the fine scratches

you got it...claybar basically takes out the "ripples" you will see on a car...gives it a glass like finish...however the wax will make it a mirror image

you can scratch a car by claying improperly. dont do it in the sun and make sure the surface is warm and cool, and use a lot of lube for the surface. If you get a lot of scratches use a polish like meguiars no9 or you can buy some poorboys products on line as well as menzerna. Cleaner wax does nothing but clean paint.

Honestly the claybar didn't make my car shine. My car shines like that everytime its clean. It just took a lot of contaminents (some I could see some I couldn't) out of the paint and made it feel like glass. I wanted to post those just so the thread starter could see that you don't get scratches...atleast not when used properly.

Claybars don't remove swirls or surface imperfections...just contamination.

I know. That's why I said in my post that the claybar didn't make my car look shiny it just made it feel smoothe by removing contamination.
