ssrunner: In your case, I would definately try the steel wool idea. I've heard on these boards before that your glass could actually be etched (permanently damaged). Don't know the validity behind it though.
it doesnt lent, smear etc. and its cheap.
to the orig question... I used a PC and some fine compound on some light scratchs (bad wipers)
the vinegar works wonders too.
0000 (4, not 3) works damn good too.

Here are some other ideas that weren't mentioned before, or that I didn't see: clay bar, Dawn blue soap, LCR (or is it CLR?) cleaner or Lime Away or something similar. I don't like the idea of using steel wool on glass, not even 000 or 0000.
