Default painting interior black...

originallly I was going to paint the trim pieces red, to match the exterior, but then i thought it would be to bright...
so, i got an idea to order some camaro dash and door trim pieces and get them painted jet black and smoothed, like exterior auto paint quality..
i think itll give the inside of my cam a nice, clean, upgraded look...
anyone done this...whatdoes everyone think??

happy t- day!

Getting other pieces is a good idea, makes the job a little easier when you can take your time on the extra pieces and not be in a hurry to get it back in to the car. I'm not saying this as an anti-painting comment, but I've never seen spray painted interiors come out as nice as the exterior. With that said, try smoothing it down, see if you can get someone to paint it with a paintgun. I plan to invest in a paint gun and air compressor just for the use of repainting my interior. Otherwise, it should look great!

I did it myself with a Duplicolor rattle can and some high-build primer. IMHO, it looks just as good as any professional job.

Clean the piece very well with some grease and wax remover, then spray a few coats of high-build primer until you have a nice even layer. Then, spray however many coats of the paint of your choice, with a few more coats of clear. Let it dry for a few days just for safety (so the paint doesn't peel when you go to sand it) Wetsand it smooth with 2000 grit sandpaper and buff it to the desired finish. Simple as that... it just takes a while.

yeah take ur time. thats the key

also just wondering, if cleaning them gets them wet, wouldnt it be best to wait a lil bit after cleaning them so all the chemicals from the cleaner arent soaked into the plastic, just an idea i dunno

i used rubbing alcohol to clean mine.

mine came out REALLY foggy when i finished. 4 coats of clear. so i wet sanded a little with 2000 grit. but it didnt do as much as i hoped. so i got some hand buffing compound. and went to work. now its crystal clear. turned out great. no orange peel, ruins, dry spots. just takes time. i used dupla-color spray paint. ( primer base and clear ) and it looks great. you can do it yourself pretty easy.

I tell ya what. I did silver in my black car and I thought it was going to be outrageously bright. I matched it with my SLP sticker on the windshield and I didnt try to sand all the peices down to look realy smooth (Which might be cool) only because I knew I wanted it to look more subtle, like a factory work. The texture doesnt look bad and it almost makes the paint look shiny yet texturized at the same time. all I did was basically use a scotch bright to scuff it after washing the parts in Dawn and painted and cleared them. I have had a few comments from people saying that it looked factory and that's what I was aimming for.

Are you saying my dash did not come out as smooth as the exterior panels? It's all in prep work, I probably had around 65 hours in the dash, and no more than 3 hours of actually laying primer, paint, and clear, the majority was sanding, and filling...Get a highbuild primer, DuraTec makes a good polyester primer that fills, and levels and is somewhat flexible without agent...I will use it on the plastic panels on my interior as well. It can be done!

...You mean to tell me you used spray paint and not a paint gun? If you did, I entirely revoke my statement. I never in a million years would've thought yours was spray painted on with how good the quality was.

Ah, nah. The only ones that I've seen that I really like are done with air/spray guns. Rattlecans just never seem to have the same effect, but that's just my opinion.

thats because most everyone that uses spray cans just takes them off hits it with some spray paint and expect it to look good. a small job like that can easly be done with rattlecan, just takes prep, time, patientce
