Unhappy SS Spoiler Damaged In Shipping...Options?

I bought an SS spoiler on eBay and it arrived yesterday. I just opened the box to check it out, but before I opened it, I noticed the ends of the box were busted and there wasn't enough packing material on the ends to protect the spoiler from damage. The very end tips of the spoiler have chipped off and it looks bad.

Pics of the damage can be seen here:

http://www.banddirector.cz28.com/custom4.html

I'm presuming this can be fixed by a body shop. It is a genuine SS spoiler and has GM/SLP part #'s on it, so I think it's worth fixing. Any idea on if this is an easy fix or not. Any idea what it might cost? The paint on the rest of the spoiler is acceptable, so is it possible to just fix the ends and touch them up to match, or will the whole spoiler need to be refinished?

I've emailed the seller with pics of the damage, so hopefully, he'll offer to help out with the repair costs.

Any suggestions?

That is a real shame. Mine had slight chunks missing out of the fins on the back. They were filled in with fiberglass repair resin.

I would have a body shop do that one. I would say it has to be repainted but that is just my 2 cents.

Did you file a claim with the shipper? How was it shipped?

What kind of idiot puts it in a box like that without packing the ends? Do some people not know how to ship things so that they don't get broken? I always try to ship things out so that they'd be how I'd like to recieve them. Even if they're a pain in the *** to unpack, I'd rather have that then something get broken.

Always pick a box that is larger on all sides than you need. Then pack as much soft/pliable things in on every side as you can. It appears to me that the edge of the spoiler was unpacked right on the edge of the box, one of the places it should have been packed/secured the most.

I'd get a quote on how much it will cost to fix, then make the seller pay for most of it. It isn't all his fault that it got broken during shipping, but one should assume that things WILL get tossed around and manhandled during shipping, so it is indeed his fault for not packing it better.

The spoiler was shipped USPS Priority Mail. Insurance wasn't offered from the seller and I don't know if he insured it.

When I ship something, I personally feel that it's my reponsibility to make sure if damage is done in shipping, I can either offer a refund or repair reimbursement. If I feel the item is of value, then I'll insure it for MY peace of mind...if it's a low priced item, then I realize that if I don't insure it, then I may have to offer a full refund. I'm prepared to accept the costs or consequences when I make my shipping choices. However, it looks like eBay's point of view is that if I don't make sure it's insured, then it's my loss...I don't agree with that.

I've contacted the seller with pics of the damage, but I haven't heard back yet. Hopefully, he'll be a stand up guy and offer some sort of compensation. I paid with credit card through paypal, so I've got plenty of options to get my money back.

I'm hoping it is an easy fix with resin or something, but I'll take it around to some body shops this week and see what they have to say.

shame he didnt insure it with usps. they are the easiest to get a claim from, then fedex and ups is awful. people that dont know how to ship items correctly shouldnt be selling them. last year i got a set of headlights in a box with abosolutely no packing material. they were in 30 pieces.

when my custom subwoofer box was damaged during shipping, UPS had some "investigators" come out to the house to take pictures of the box and packaging. Even though the package was obviously thrown around/droped by UPS workers, my claim was denied and I was SOL.

good luck with that one.

It's not that bad. Any good shop should be able to do the fiberglass work to fix it.

If it was not insured there is no recourse with the post office. Only hope is that the seller will help you out. I always offer insurance when I ship anything, although many decline. I ship alot with them and UPS. If its anything of value, you need to make sure its insured. Like stated above it looks like it can be fixed. Good Luck

I just got back from taking it to 3 different body shops. I don't have good news. Yes, it is fixable, but all 3 shops said that it would need to be sanded down about 3" or so up the spoiler so the fiberglass would stick and then they could build it up and re-shape it. The bad news is that the whole spoiler would then need to be refinished. The quotes are running $300 to fix it!

I haven't heard back from the seller yet on how he wants to proceed. I did talk to my credit card company though to make sure I have recourse and they assured me there's no problem with putting the charge in dispute even with the damage just being done in shipping.

I have several options IMO, so I just need to see what the seller wants to do...
