Default t-top vs hard top

I don't know if this is the right place for this thread or not, so just bear with me...I have a couple questions in this matter. Is there any kind of advantage of one over the other? And is a t-top with the tops in place just as strong as a hard top? And last but not least....which do most of yall prefer when it comes to racing?

As far as strength goes, they're the same, the underlying chassis components are the same.
For racing, no difference as long as you have some good subframe connectors to prevent the car from twisting. You'll want that even with a hard top.
Occasionally you'll hear a story of a t-top popping out during racing. It's rare, but it does happen.

Yeh, agreed with what Octane said. If you really want to be safe, you can always install a roll cage.

hardtop!!! lol cuss you see to many t-top cars drvingin around. when you see a hard top Z...... lol people are goin to say that they the same, and they are. it's just a matter of preferance and if your willing to deal with alttle water driping in when it raining hard outside for t-tops, other than that it's basically the same, i got hardtop just cuss it's harder to find them.... i'm talking about the Z's and SS's...but it really dosnt matter, i'm goin to end up buyin a t-top car to have both! lol

From 1998 on to 2002, on the Trans-AM and WS6 Trans-AM, T-Tops are the only choice. For hard tops you had to buy a Firebird or Camaro.

I have never had my t-tops leak, at all really. Sometimes I get a small leak where the window meets the top part, but thats its. Hell my dads car that doesnt have t-tops or convertable leak just as bad.

In the end, I think its personal preference as to what you like, because the differences are really negligible.

I have both, My 99 being a SS hardtop and my 01 being a SS T-Top. I really believe that it all has to do with personal preferance. I like having the hardtop because they are very hard to find. The 01 is my DD so I like having the T-Tops in this one. Where racing is concerned, I agree with what everyone else said. DO subframe connectors.

My t-tops leaked when I first got the car with 20K miles.. I added 3 point SFC's from UMI and i now have 22K miles on it and there are no more leaks. T-Tops are pure **** IMHO..

I like the hardtop and to me it looks more aggressive without the t tops. Since the steel wasn't cut out where the t tops would have went it IS going to be stiffer also. That seems to be one of the first things any ls1 guy notices about my car even over all the other exterior mods I have done to it. It definitely adds some uniqueness to it. Supposedly the hardtop cars are lighter than the t top cars.

I was going to ask this, I heard that hardtops were a tad bit lighter than the t-top cars. Then again on summer cruises here in Texas it's nice to take off the t-tops.

I have a t-top and I would say they are about as strong as the hardtops, I flipped my z28 and the only part that got messed up is in the middle infront. I had the t-tops off too

thanks for all the input, i had heard that the body of a t-top was more susceptible to body tweaking, but know i know that was just a load of b/s

The Trans Am is actually a Firebird.

My ride is a black 2000 Firebird Formula WS6 hard top

To me, it doesnt make a difference. I always wanted T-Tops, but after I had them for a while, the desire kinda went away. The "cool factor" went pretty much away w/ my 95 Camaro. Now in the Trans Am, i could basically do w/out them. the shades never come out, its like its a hard top. And too, unless the weather is perfect outside (70-85 degrees or so), they are going to be in. Even then, they may not come out.

Subframe Connectors were my 1st real mod. I did it not long after I had the car. Its almost a must in an Fbody b/c the quarter panels will get dimples eventually. My 95 Camaro had dimples all over the quarter panels, but that was before i learned about SFCs.
