I don't own a towel that cost more than $15.

The biggest difference is quality and quality control. I never have to worry if I have a good towel. They are very durable and are available in a variety of sizes. There are many different types of microfiber such as edgeless, short nap, long nap, plush, ultra plush, waffle weave, etc. that serve more specific purposes.

short nap - glass cleaning, wax/sealant removal, general duties
plush and ultra plush - quick detailing, final wipedown
