how do you dye the carpet?

how do you dye the carpet? i have an extra 4th gen carpet. that is light grey with some stains on it.. today i got it soaked trying to clean it. but i left the padding on the bottom. and it seems like its really lose now.. was i not supposed to do that? i didnt see anyway to take the padding off.. how can i dye it graphite or black? do i keep the padding off. or just tear it off and throw it away? where do you dye it and what kind of dye and how much is it?
Go to AutoZone. They have some rattle can stuff that works GREAT for carpets (forget what its called, but you'll know it when you see it). Had some old faded carpet out of an 87 T/A I used this stuff on before I put it in my 91Z and it lookspretty dern good.
