So, to correct the quote, I'll say, "Clay is good even if the finish has very little contaminants. It is never a waste of time."
I stand behind what I said. Very true that you can add contaiminates to washing, etc., but those are very much correctable with a good paint cleaner (compound) and polish/sealant.
Clay bars are great, don't get me wrong, but on a light contaminated surface, most times you can correct it without going that route. It won't hurt anything by using it regularly, but why do so if you don't need to?

I agree with you... I have a car that is barely driven... stays inside... doesnt see rain. When I was looking for clay I went to a really well respected shop to get my supplies, they told me for a surface thats not really contaminated, and since I was using some medium-high abrasives to start my process, that claying wasnt neccessary. My results were well... flawless.

mc01ta: You poor bastard. You have no idea what you're getting yourself into.

Good overall guide. I'm casually planning some follow-ups to my Porter Cable FAQ in the coming months. First I need to buy a canopy, so I can dry the car before the water spots set in. After that, I have a few guides planned using more illustrations this time.

Anyone in Houston want to help?

"Your making me crazy" is improper grammer.

I mean if you're nitpicking about wax vs. polish then I'd think this would bother you as well.

[hijack alert]

What canopy do you have in mind? I grabbed one of those cheap ones from Wal Mart (10 x 10), and it works well at the house. I use it to extend the shade my garage provides, but I am not too fond of it when I am out and about working remotely.

[unhijack]

I'd be happy to help ..

Ling_650vette, you are not correct, when I polish I can PERMANATELY REMOVE SWIRLS and SCRATCHES and when I clay after the polish isn't removed because the polish has already broken down and DISAPPEARED BUT it was used to enhance the paint's finish PERMANATELY.

Would you like me to go detail a dirty car, polish and take pictures then clay and take pictures and give you a tutorial? Billy Bad *** has just spoken...
I never said their results arent permanent.

You're choosing to pick what you want out of the thread, and try to rip that apart. Someone with your expertise, I'd expect them to understand what Im trying to say.

Im sure other people feel differently on the fact that polish, and wax isnt permanent. But what do we know...

I'm glad it is helpful. The best part of detailing is it is alot like modding your car, you try many different combinations to get the most desireable results. Just like the thread "newbie mod mistakes" (faithful tech readers know what I'm talking about), we should have the same kind of thread in this forum to avoid all the crappy posting. The more you search, read and educate yourself the better your car will look. Most people aren't patient enough to hit that little itty bitty search button out laziness and want other people to answer everything for them. "whats the best wax, etc." drives me nuts! Glad some of you feel my pain as others seem to be num to education.

I have to agree with hondo though.... dude should get off the horse. Not everyone knows what is what and thats why forums like this exist.

Calling people numb to education, when they are posting a question to begin with, is absolutely rediculous.... matter of fact it makes zero sense.
