cost to paint car
im looking to get my 99 camaro repainted in black and was wondering what it should cost. i got an estimate for 4300 and wanted to know if this seemed right. this 4300 is including fixing a minor crack in the hood, a dent in the rocker panel and 2 or 3 minor chips and dents. this is supposibly for getting everything painted except the engine bay and underside of the rear hatch

IN the world of automotive refinishing, you really get what you pay for. $4,300 is not out of control by any means for a complete repaint including prep and all else involved. just make sure you do your homework about the place that will be painting your car.

$3700 back in '00 to paint my thirdgen. That was all body work needed and, parts. Plus added the heritage spoiler, ram air hood and heritage stripes painted on. Lots of work involved to do it right.

Around here, 4300 is really high for the job you described...mainly because of it being black (the materials for a 2 stage gloss black paint will be cheap).
I'm having my car painted and the total job is going to be 5k for a custom color change with a "show quality look". Everything took apart etc. and sprayed with a 3 stage paint. The materials for the paint (about enough for 2 gallons of each) is going to be $2200. So the labor on this job is going to be 2800, and your job is MUCH less labor intensive.
IMO, You should be able to do much better in price and still get a quality job done, but like Mike02Z said, sometimes it depends on where you live.
It always helps to have a personal connection to the person doing your car, I have a hard time letting a complete stranger work on my stuff. I like to at least know a guy that knows a guy
Ask around your family and friends and see if they know anyone personally that does good work and not just the "best" local body shop. If you dont have much luck there, go to classic car shows/cruises in your area and talk to those guys about who to have paint your car, because almost every classic car has been repainted at some point and these are people that really care and are meticulous about their cars, not just someone who had a dent fixed in the family SUV.

All depends where you live as i said. Getting a car painted in NYC is going to cost a LOT more than in Dothan, Alabama. San Franciso will cost more than in St. Louis. If the cost of living in an area is high the cost for EVERYTHING is higher including a good paint job. Housing is higer, wagers are higher and goods and services are higher. Unless you know someone that is

4300 isn't too bad. I would see what materials they use (good paint or lower grade stuff). Around here a good quality paint job (not show car) is around 5000. I do a lot of body work on the side, and for a car with no body damage, I usually charge around 1500. So you might ask around your area, there may be someone that could do it on the side cheaper (like someone from a bodyshop) .
