Default How do you remove...

Anyone know how to take the rings that are around the A/C vents off the dash? Do you have the pull the actual vents them selfs then the rings pop out or do they just pop out with the right amount of force? Any help is appreciated!--Tony

Take the whole assembly out and then take out the ring. There are two barb tabs holding it into the dash; located at about 4 and 7 o'clock. Take a std. screwdriver and work out it. Once you get the whole assembly out, take the screwdriver and pop the top or bottom of the ring and itll come off.

Sorry I am kind of dumb, but how do you get the whole assembly out? Just work it back and forth and it will pull out?--Tony

Pry the thing out and work it side to side.

DO NOT use very much force. Listen to me you will break stuff. DO NOT just pry it out like stated above. The best way I found to do it is to take a ink pen & break off the metal pocket clip. Straighten it out & slide it in around the edge of the ring. Once it comes off you will notice the individual vent louvers cliped into their own holder. Be VERY careful upon removal or they will break. Then just follow these steps to re-install, just remember which one you take out because they are NOT all the same size.

I know this from experience since I removed mine without asking any ?'s. Mine are painted silver now. Hope this helps.

Where are these clips at you speak of, like I said I am dumb when it comes to this stuff. Are they like actually inside the vents?--Tony

The plastic ring has small spikes that poke into the dash in three places around the ring (not visible until the ring is removed). I used a small pen-size flat head screwdriver (the kind they give away at auto shows) to carefully pry around the edge untill it was far out enough for me to wiggle them out by hand. Be very careful not to pry too much (that will damage the dash and ring) and be sure to work around the ring slowly and carefully. Once you have the entire vent assembly removed, turn it over and look at the rear. You'll see that the inner part is attached to the ring with two large tabs 180* from eachother. Pry the tab slightly inward and the inner rotating section will pop off. Knowing this, you could probably remove the inner rotating section from the ring before removing the ring from the dash. This might make ring removal easier, because you could reach through it and pull forward instead of prying. I'm not sure since I removed the whole assembly at once.

Here is how I masked off the driver's side vent to paint it:

Here is how I masked off the other rings to paint them:

Notice that I masked off the vent so that the only area that needs to be painted, gets painted. I also masked off the inner lip that the inner rotating section rides on (this is so that it doesnt get gummed up and stick)

Here is the final result:

I ended up getting them out, took a little bit but we got er' done. Took the vents out first then stuck my hand in the center vent holes and pulled up on the tabs that hold the rings in and slid them out. I will post pics once I get them painted so ya'll can see them. Thanks a lot for the help!--Tony
