Default Weight Reduction

I have always wondered how much pounds would we lose if we replaced all the outside panels with lightweight material including the hood and back hatch with plexi.

Has anyone tried or knows the process?

It's already mostly fiberglass and plastic, how much lighter do you want?

i found a carbon fiber hatch along with fenders on e-bay a few times before, and the 1/4 pannels could be molded into fiberglass. might not be a lot of weight but every bit helps if you got the $$$ to pay with

How much lighter is a carbon fiber hatch?

And if you do get one, please paint it.

I wouldn't worry about trying to lose weight by fabbing up new body panels because there are hundreds of pounds to be lost before attempting this. Pull the carpet and padding, back seats and belts and seat supports, jack, spare tire, bumper supports (front and back), put Kirkeys up front, purchas a tubular k-member, lightweight battery, heat shield under dash/by firewall, pulled the airbags, !a/c, !ps, remove the catback, run lightweight drag brakes, lightweight drag wheels, aftermarket fiberglass hood, and run a Lexan back windshield and side windows. After that, ****, shower and get a haircut then take her to the track!

It would completely unsafe to use the VFN body parts on a street driven car unless you are rolling around with a 10 pt roll cage. You can still lose quite a bit of weight and maintain a decent level of comfort. Here's what I am planning on doing/have already done on my DD Z28.

I removed the stock carpet and used a DIY spray in bedliner. Weighs like 1lb, looks good (flat black) and is very durable. Get some Kirkey seats up front with the padded seat cover (or you could spend some extra money and gain a little more weight but gain some comfort with some Sparco, Recaros, etc.). I'm going to use a lightweight battery relocated to the rear. Catback is coming off and a bullet will be at the end of the Y-pipe. Find a fiberglass hood (4in cowl or 3in SS from VFN for me), lightweight wheels (draglites, prostars, etc). I'm sure I will find other things to ditch. I'm keeping the AC and what not. I may remove the airbags and the front and rear bumper supports if/when I run a cage. That could drop you several hundred pounds easily and still keep some comfort.
