It will be fine. SS/WS6 hoods did not come with padding.

SS and WS6 hoods were composite, not steel. Might be a little noiser inside the car without the pad.

Mine doesnt have it. When sitting in traffic on a hot day you can see heat waves raising off the hood.. No paint damage yet. If it does, I'll just re-paint it...

The true reason for the padding is to smather(sp?) an engine fire.

I know my 02 Z does not have any padding under the stock hood but I'm not the first owner either.

I took mine off a year ago without any side effects. With a white hood, I'd have likely noticed something.

mines all ******* tore up. it wasent like that untill last night. i went to the drag strip, ran and opened my hood after and noticed my serp belt was off the tensioner on top and the PS pump pulley. then promptly noticed that my hood padding was all tore up right above the pulley. so im taking it off.

the pad does several things. first off is noise, second is to help with heat, third to help keep the engine bay warm in really cold weather and the final reason is in the scenario that en engine catches fire, the buttons will melt out and the cover will fall voer the angine and help smother it out.

so not really any bad effects to taking it out

SS and WS6 hoods are composite. Steel has a higher thermal conductivity than the composites....that means more heat gets to the paint on the outside of the hood. Also, there are air passage ways inside the SS and WS6 hoods (Ram Air), which further insulates the outside.

I don't know that it would be too much for the paint. I have an inkling that the insulation is more for noise, but I am not a GM engineer, so I have no way of knowing. If it were my car, I'd either leave it, or I'd replace it with something else (mirrors, some aluminized panels, etc).

Just my $0.02...

It also helps so that if as mentioned, you throw a belt real hard right at the hood it doesnt dent the **** out of it.

I took mine off a long time ago.

That's so weird, my 1999 Z28 has the padding, and even has a nice Chevy Bowtie etched into the middle of it.

Those who have removed your padding, have you noticed noise differences with and without it?

I'm thinking of *adding* padding/sound deadener to my WS6 to try to quiet the diesel powered sewing machine under there. It's embarassing to pull up next to someone. I usually have to crank the hell out of the stereo to drown it out. Even then, it might just be preventing me from hearing it, not them. lol

Bought my car with 19 miles on it, never had any hood matting on it. My hood paint seems fine... well fine from the heat, cant say the same about the rock chips

My 98 Z has the pad with the bowtie as well. I took some red tape and made the bowtie red, looks pretty good

Just take it off...the hood cant get that much hotter from the engine bay without it than direct sunlight for hours at a time.
