underhood padding?
underhood padding? i have a 95 z28 and i was wondering if i can take the padding under the stock hood off. would this affect heat or anything? didnt quite know were to post this so here it goes.

Verdad Gallardo thanks for the replys u guys. i heard that the pad is to keep the engine warmer and others say its to protect the hood but i think im going to take it off and see what happens the hood has dents and scratches anyway itll be a better excuse to paint it 
mines all ******* tore up. it wasent like that untill last night. i went to the drag strip, ran and opened my hood after and noticed my serp belt was off the tensioner on top and the PS pump pulley. then promptly noticed that my hood padding was all tore up right above the pulley. so im taking it off.
the pad does several things. first off is noise, second is to help with heat, third to help keep the engine bay warm in really cold weather and the final reason is in the scenario that en engine catches fire, the buttons will melt out and the cover will fall voer the angine and help smother it out.
so not really any bad effects to taking it out

I don't know that it would be too much for the paint. I have an inkling that the insulation is more for noise, but I am not a GM engineer, so I have no way of knowing. If it were my car, I'd either leave it, or I'd replace it with something else (mirrors, some aluminized panels, etc).

correct my if im wrong, but doesnt the 98+ camaro have an aluminum hood? no sure about the previous years.
my 01 z28 has no padding, and while im not the original owner, theres no tabs or any spots for clips to hold one if place.

Those who have removed your padding, have you noticed noise differences with and without it?
I'm thinking of *adding* padding/sound deadener to my WS6 to try to quiet the diesel powered sewing machine under there. It's embarassing to pull up next to someone. I usually have to crank the hell out of the stereo to drown it out. Even then, it might just be preventing me from hearing it, not them. lol

SS and WS6 hoods are composite. Steel has a higher thermal conductivity than the composites....that means more heat gets to the paint on the outside of the hood. Also, there are air passage ways inside the SS and WS6 hoods (Ram Air), which further insulates the outside.
