How do I get tar off?
How do I get tar off? Lately I think I'm not supposed to have a nice car. About 1-1/2 months ago I got nailed with white paint all over every panel of my car. I'm still getting that off the body. Well, this week I must have driven down a road that just got tarred b/c now my car is caked in tar. It's at least 1/2 thick behind the wheels. I scrubbed yesterday for an hour on a 6"x6" spot to get the tar off. My arms were killing me. I have tar ALL OVER the car. It's in the rims even. Think one of those porter cables with a pad will be more effective? Which one should I get? I'm not an apperance guy, I just like a clean car. This is aggrevating.
There are some things at autoparts stores specifically for removing tar, but I don't know how well they work. WD-40 works really well, I've used it before. And the easiest would probably be paint thinner....

-eblow grease-works but sucks to do
-rubbing compound-useless
-WD-40-barely worked if at all
-3M adhesive remover-working really good on the non caked areas. I have to buy another bottle b/c we didn't have much at the shop.
I'm trying to find a plastic razor blade to use but people look at me like I'm a tard when I ask for one.

Yah I think most everybody missed that part about a 1/2"!
For "normal" tar, WD-40 is really the best bang for the buck. 3M specialty products always work very well but they are also rather costly.
I think you should post a picture. I've never seen 1/2" of tar build up before. You sure you were on the correct side of the construction cones

. Ha, yeah I was unless all the traffic was on the wrong side and the const crew were on the wrong side also. I'll take a pic to show how thick it is in some areas.
Gasoline works great. Goof Off(comes in a metal can) also works. These MIGHT put a VERY SLIGHT haze into your clear coat that you would need to use some compound on.
I'd stick with tar remover you get from the autoparts store though, it definetly won't mess up your paint.
