"Proper" way to do Berger Panel

I just picked up some 320 grit sandpaper and a can of flat-black spray paint from AutoZone today. I was wondering if a coat of primer is required prior to paint, and also if just one rattle can is enough. Thanks.

i used 1 full can of sandable primer.. sanded smooth, 3 cans of flat black.. and wetsanded with 1500

u used 4 coats of paint??? that seems like a little to much unless u messed up like 30 times and had to sand it over and over.......

4 coats is nothing really. The black on my car has over 10 layers including clear.
