ok i was looking through search pages for switch locations and came across a link for a website selling switch panels for inside your ashtray for 33 bucks (pretty cool i thought)...so why not make if and save myself some money(not to mention its always badass when you make something and it works)...way easier then you would think....

unfortunally this exceeded 10 steps to complete this project so the difficulty level will be considered : EXPERT ONLY





step 1. remove ashtray

step 2. get a random piece of cardboard and make a template, there are no bends needed so just cut it so it sets ontop of the edges around where the ashtray usually goes....trim the cardboard till you happy with the fit

step 3. find a random piece of plastic that you do not need.... i used a dvd case and it worked great (had enough to make 3)

step 4. using a sharpie or pencil trace the cardboard template onto the plastic

step 5. cut it out and trim to properly fit.

step 6. if the plastic is not desired color... paint it!!

step 7. you may need to purchase switches if you dont have any just lying around (buy online.. you can get them for 2 bucks a pop insted of 6 or 7 bucks) remember to use rocker or push button since toggle switches will not allow the lid to close

step 8. once you have switches cut or drill the appropriate size and number of holes in the desired location

step 9. install switches and hook up your desired wiring

step 10. use 3m double sided tape and install on the bottom edges of your new switch panel, then put in place (dont forget to clean where you want it to stick)

step 11. enjoy

this was installed on a 01 camaro z28 a4, but same process can be used on other f-bodys

what are u using those switches for?

 

im using them to bypass the safty on my indash monitor.....car is supposed to be in park w/ the e-brake up.....f that

if i need any more switches ill just make another one and get some smaller switches

 

i was going to do that, but the lid woundn't close. so i drill some holes in the ash tray itself and it look good

 

my lid closes perfectly fine, the ashtray lid fits flush and you could never tell there was anything in there until u open it.... you just have to use rocker switches....this maybe diffrent in t/a's

naw man it ain't just you. that was my first thought. i know its sad. once my computer loaded all the way up so i could see better, i could tell what you had done. you did a great job.

 

Where did you buy those switches? Anyone have a source for relatively small 12VDC switches rated @ 20A?

 

i had these ones in my garage, but you can get them at discount auto for 6 or 7 bucks apeice... i saw a link in a diffrent thread where similar ones were 2 bucks each, but dont remember the site...
