Another thing to consider there buddy is, look what state we live in. And considering you have dark paint, the engine bay isn't going to get it any hotter than the damn sun here is going to. Just figured I'd throw that in there. Just pull it off, but don't toss it, set it aside in your garage, that way if the paint does start to lose its sheen then you can throw it back on and have Booth bring the hood back to new.

You can take it off, but your hood may have had it installed when the paint was still wet in the factory, (as was the case with my '94 I discovered) and it will therefore look like ***. I removed it and had the underside of the hood painted about 3 years ago.
I quickly looked for a pic. This is the best I could quickly find. The underside of the hood is partially visible, but was not the focus of the picture.

The body shop I just had one painted at said as much.
Ditto on checking locally for another hood. I got a perfect one (wrong color) for free with the mat just for asking when I got some hail damage back in the spring. Camaro guys help each other out!

The mat underneath the hood serves multiple purposes.
It's a fire insulator, it will smoother engine fires as it burns/melts, hopefully saving your life in the process.
It's a sound deadener.
It's a heat insulator. For those that live in colder climates it retains engine heat better in order to facilitate warm up quicker.
It doesn't protect the paint, as summer heat on a blazing sunny day in direct sunlight will expose your paint to much worse conditions than the heat underneath the hood.
Fibreglass hoods don't usually have it due to the insulating properties of fibreglass ie look underneath the drywalls of your house. This also is why it takes a whole mile for cold air to reach the intake on a SS hood due to all the heat retention.
Later model years may not have the insulator as the stock exhaust system is so well designed that light off for the cats is in 30 seconds. Combined with an all aluminum block engine warm up is almost a moot point which makes the adding of the material questionable in earlier years of the LS1. Shows what they learned in a few years.
